Photoshop Blues

You know when you have your heart set on something you would really love to do, and no matter how many attempts you give, it still won't work!?

I took one class in Photoshop during my undergraduate years at Purdue, and I've forgotten EVERYTHING. I mean...it's ALL gone. It's been a dream of mine for awhile to illustrate a children's book. I would be thrilled to learn how to digitally color my sketches, but I'm going to have to re-learn how to manuver Photoshop. Maaaannnn.

Last night, I sat down and spent three hours digitally coloring the only way I know how...with the paintbrush/mouse. It was tedious. Like writing with your other hand. But I'm getting better....slowwwwwly.

So, today I took a break from drawing to work on a quilt block for Tacha, as part of our quilting bee. She asked for a 12.5" block made up of 4 smaller wonky stars. She also asked that we put an animal in the center of each star. This was a really fun block. But, then I needed a break from my "break"....but naptime was over. :)

Wow Ariel it is absolutely fabulous. Thank you so so much. Thank you especially for all the wonderful fabric you have added in. I love the fish in a bag, the dogs and the horse. Amelie will be sooooooooo excited!

Wish I was there to do a bit of babysitting. I know the feeling of working hard through naps and then needing a break when the kids wake up!

And you should definitely pursue your dream of illustrating a kids book.

Too bad about Photoshop, I hate when stuff like that happens! Keep it up though, I'm sure you can relearn things and your illustrations are wonderful so I'd love to see them in a book!

Ariel, I can't believe how beautiful the Little Boy Blue illustration already is, and you think you don't know what you are doing! You have been blessed, my friend. :) Love you!

Ariel! Do you have Illustrator? That may be a good program for you to use for what you're trying to do. They've got a new tracing feature now that makes digitizing drawn artwork easy (and vector-based instead of pixel-based). For work, I do a lot of sketches on paper, scan them in, trace them in Illustrator, and go to town!

The little boy blue looks great!! I have paintshop pro and that seems like a second language to me. It took me forever just learning how to do layers.

Tacha's blocks look great!!

I recently found your blog, Ariel and I am loving your work! It's making me want to get back into illustrating, even if it's just for my own fun and enjoyment! Great quilt blocks...

Gotta get a Wacom tablet. Painting with the mouse will get old fast.

I love the square with the Anna Maria Horner fabric.

I love it that you are experimenting with Photoshop. FOr some reason photoshop intimidates me. I am more of a illustrator kind of person.
Head over to my blog for a super duper giveaway

I think it looks great, but I understand your frustration. I always have wanted to write a children's book, but am definitely not an artist.

I have to share something with you. Remember the bag I won from you? Well, I had put it aside thinking I would give it to my daughter for her birthday since she really liked it, but didn't come right out and ask. Well, she sewed a bunch of little pocket bag type things today and came to me with a whole stack. She said, "Do you think that I would be able to trade these for one of those bags from that lady who made yours?" Well, I told her that I would trade her work for the bag. She was so excited and I think she learned the value of bartering and hard work. Just had to share. Take care.

Okay I give up, there isn't anything you can't do! I will buy the first copy, and then it will be the book that I give to all babies in my life, the one I usually give has gone out of print. Get working on it for me!

I recommend getting a tablet and a pen for what you are trying to do. You will get much better results than a mouse. Plus the pen acts like a real pen. The more pressure you use the darker/thicker the lines and the less pressure you use the thinner/lighter your lines will be
